have therefore detailed below when and how we store the information
you provide us with, or that we gather about you from our website,
AcademicBookTrade.co.uk. By accepting this privacy policy, and
our Terms and Conditions, you consent to our use and disclosure
of your personal information as detailed in this Privacy Policy.
This Privacy Policy forms part of our Terms and Conditions.
We are registered with the Data Protection
Registrar from November 2003.
1. Children
Minors under the age of 18 are not eligible
to use our services: if you are under that age, please do not
submit any personal
information to us. You may only use this service in conjunction
with your parent or guardian.
2. Information we collect about you
When you register, we collect information
about you for the purposes of identification, security and
in order to help you use the
services our website provides as successfully as possible.
We store the information we collect in a secure database
on a separate server from our website. Where appropriate, parts
of that information are encrypted for extra security. However,
perfect security on the Internet can never be guaranteed:
by
using our website, you actively choose to provide information
to us at various times and for various purposes in accordance
with our Privacy Policy and Terms and Conditions.
When you use the site we collect and store
all information relating to any books you may list on our site,
any payments you make to us, books you list on your Wishlist,
and any buying decisions you may make on our site. Most of this
information will be easily available to you via your ‘My Account’
page, although records of transactions and listings of our site
may be archived off-site after a period of time. We may also
keep logs and store information from those logs relating to listings,
payments and buying decisions you may make on our site. All this
information will be kept and archived securely.
Cookies: We may also track your use of our website
using cookies, sessions and other devices. This helps make sure
you receive the best service from us that is relevant to you,
and also helps us develop the new services on our website that
will helpful to you and other users. This may include, but is
not limited to: your ISP, the URL you have come from, time of
day you use the site. You may disable cookies if you wish: our
website will use a Session ID in your browser URL instead. If
you do this, never send this Session ID to another user, otherwise
they may be able to log in as if they were you.
If you choose to leave book reviews, comments
in any of chat rooms or feedback for other users when you have
made a transaction, this information will be publicly available
to all users of the site. We will collect and may use this information.
If you send us correspondence, either electronically,
or by mail, or contact us in any other way, we may keep records
of these contacts in a file specific to you. In the same way,
we may keep records of any contacts with us that refer to you
made by other users of the site.
3. How we use your information
We may use the information in the files that
we keep to resolve disputes, solve problems and enforce our Terms
and Conditions.
Your personally identifiable information will be stored and
processed on computers in the United Kingdom.
When you list a book for sale, and a purchaser
clicks on the ‘Buy From Seller’ button, or when you click on
a ‘Buy From Seller’ button when making a purchase, your name
and email address will be emailed to the other party in the transaction.
You will then take any responsibility for any further information
about yourself that you choose to disclose to the other party
in the transaction, including addresses, phone numbers and payment
details. This applies whether the other party in the transaction
is an individual, a Bookshop or other type of organisation.
We may use the information you give us, and
that we gather from your activities on the site, to send you
information on new services offered by ourselves. Sometimes we
send carefully targeted offers to selected groups of customers
who have indicated that they are happy to receive this information:
when we do this, we do not give those businesses your contact
details. You can change your mind about receiving such offers
at any time, and notify us by changing your preferences on your
My Account page.
We will not give out any personally identifying
information about you to any third party without your permission,
other than to comply with any necessary legal requirements or
legitimate requirements of any law enforcement agency. We maintain
physical and electronic safeguards, and have procedures in place
to ensure that all personally identifiable information about
you is kept securely and confidentially.
4. Maintaining Your Own Privacy
You choose a username and password which give
you access to the services we provide. You are known by your
username to other
users of our website. We therefore advise you to ensure that
your username does not immediately identify you as an individual,
or provide others with an easy means of identifying or contacting
you eg we suggest you do not use your email address as your
username. Use and disclosure of your password and username
is entirely at your discretion, and you accept legal responsibility
for all activities carried out on and off the website in
relation to your username and password.
In the same way, if you choose to use any
of the services provided by any other organisation which you
access through any sort of link to or from our site, the disclosure
of personal information to these organisations is your responsibility.
How this information is stored and used is then subject to the
Privacy Policy of that organisation.
If you know or suspect that your password
has become known to another person, you must inform us immediately.
You remain liable for any activities carried out using your username
and/or password.
If you are using a computer that can be used
by others (eg in a University or other public place) you should
always remember to Log Out at the end of every session, to ensure
that nobody else can continue using your username and password.
It is your responsibility to ensure that your username and password
are not passed on, or cannot be used, in this way.
5. Maintaining the privacy of other users
You will receive limited information
on other users when you participate in a transaction initiated
on our website. You
may not disclose this information to any third party or keep
it for any purpose other than that related to the particular
transaction, without the express permission of the other
party.
6. Accessing and Changing Information we hold
about you
We comply fully with the requirements of the
Data Protection Act. You have easy access to the information
stored in your My
Account page, and can change personalised information registered
there with us. In addition, you may request copies of all the
information we hold on you in accordance with the provisions
of the Act, and we will provide it, for a fee of £10, within
the stipulated period.
7. Use of Email Tools
You may not use the Email This Page to a Friend
service to send spam or any other content that would violate
our Terms
and
Conditions. We do not permanently store either the message
or the email address sent using any of these tools, and we
do not use the email address for anything other than to send
that particular email. We do not store, rent, sell or exchange
those email addresses. You are solely responsible for the
content of any email you may send in this way, and the views
expressed
within it are entirely your own responsibility.
8. Changes to this Policy.
Any changes to
this policy will be announced 30 days before coming into operation,
and will be displayed on our website. They will be emailed
to you if you have selected this service on your My Account page.
