Q:
Who/What is AcademicBookTrade.co.uk?
A: See About
Us
Q: Who is AcademicBookTrade.co.uk for?
A: Anyone 18 or over who is resident in the UK wants to buy or sell second hand
academic books and wants to reach a large, dedicated marketplace
of other people who also want to buy and sell academic second hand
books.
See About Us for
more details.
Q:
Do you have a bookshop where I can come and look at the stock?
A: We don’t have a physical bookshop, and we don’t buy or sell books ourselves:
all trading is done on the site, between individuals, or between
individuals and the second hand bookshops that list with us. Books
pass between buyer and seller, and do not come to AcademicBookTrade.co.uk
at any point.
Q:
Do I need to register to use AcademicBookTrade.co.uk?
A: You can browse
books for sale without registering. If you want to buy a book and you
are not yet registered, we have set up an easy system for you to
register and buy your first book at the same time. If you want to
sell second hand books or add books to the Books Wanted list, you
will need to register. Once you have, you can use My Account to keep track
of everything
you buy and sell, and what’s on your wishlist.
Q:
How do you use and store the information I give you about myself
when I use the site?
A: See
our Privacy Policy
Q: What can I use AcademicBookTrade.co.uk for?
A: You can list academic second hand books for sale, or buy them from the sellers
who have listed them for sale on the site. If you can’t find the
book you want at any time you can add it to the Books Wanted. You
can only list academic books at the moment, and there are some things
you cannot list (eg photocopies, magazines, or any publication that
is illegal).
See Terms
and Conditions for full details.
Q:
Can I list academic journals on the site?
A: Sorry, we are not currently set up to accept journal listings.
Q:
How do I buy second hand books on AcademicBookTrade.co.uk?
A: It’s easy:
you can search for a particular book, or browse our subject categories,
and then click on the Buy from Seller button.
See How
to Buy for
more details.
Q:
How do I sell second hand books on AcademicBookTrade.co.uk?
A: Listing
your books for sale is currently free for individuals. Bookshops
please see our special Bookshops page. Once you’ve registered
there is a simple 'wizard' that takes you through a step-by-step
listing process – it is quick and easy to list each book
for sale, and you can keep track of all your sales and listings
using your My Account page.
See How to Sell for more details.
Q: Will my book sell via your site and how long will it take?
A: Whilst we can’t
make any guarantees about sales of individual books, we can tell you that
AcademicBookTrade.co.uk is already the biggest dedicated
site for listing second hand academic books in the UK, after just a few
months trading. We are growing steadily, attracting more and more visitors
to the
site each week . If yours is an academic book, and isn’t either rare or
antiquarian (which we don’t deal with) please do list it on the site - sales
listings
are currently FREE to individuals. In general, more recently published books,
‘classic texts’ and books in high demand on reading lists will be more likely
to sell faster. Other factors such as the condition, the price, and the
time of year you list the book, will all play a part. You can increase the
chances
of your book selling quickly by telling others about the site, adding a
link to your Departmental web-pages, and we can supply you with posters for
your
Departmental noticeboards.
Q: What are my books worth?
A: If your books are to be listed on our site, we
give guidelines for pricing as part of the listing process. We are not able
to give book valuations: values depend on a number of factors, especially
if the book is rare or old. We suggest you contact your local
antiquarian bookshop for advice: try web directories or yellow pages for
contact details.
Q: I have a lot of academic books to sell, but I want to sell them
all in one go, not individually. Can you help?
A: Sorry, no. We don’t have
a physical bookshop, and we don’t buy or sell books ourselves: all trading
is done on the site, between individuals, or
between individuals and the second hand bookshops that list with us. You
are welcome to list your books with us, and we can upload your list for you
if
you decide to sell them individually. Otherwise, we suggest you contact a
second hand bookshop in your nearest university town – try web directories
or yellow pages for contact details.
Q:
What happens if I sell my book in some other way, or I change my
mind about selling?
A: It’s easy:
you can delist (remove) any book you want to using your My Account
page, at any time. If you sell your book through some other means,
please
do remember to delist it to save having to disappoint potential
buyers. Sorry, no refunds of the listing fee once we start charging.
Q:
Can I leave feedback for other people on the site?
A: This feature will will be live shortly. You
will then be able to leave feedback when you complete a transaction
as a buyer or seller for the other person involved in the transaction.
You
will
be able to look at the feedback others have left about you, and
other users of the site. Please do use this feature after each
transaction as it helps other buyers and sellers understand more
about the people they are trading with. However, it is important
that you stick to the facts when you leave feedback, and don’t
use offensive language. See our Terms and Conditions for more details.
Q:
What happens if the transaction goes wrong?
A: The
first crucial element of a successful transaction is that both
participants are aware what they are agreeing to do, which is why
we ask both buyers and sellers to confirm they have read, understood
and accepted our terms and conditions when listing books, or clicking
on the Buy from Seller button. The second crucial element is that
both participants then deal with other under the terms of that
agreement, honestly and promptly. Most people are honest and trustworthy,
so we suggest that if you encounter a problem, you should give
the other person the benefit of the doubt and communicate your
concerns to them in the first instance. If that doesn’t work, and
you feel you have been treated dishonestly, we encourage you to
report the problem to the appropriate authorities. You can also
leave feedback (but please be careful to stick to the facts in what you say) . To help prevent problems
occurring, and for extra peace of mind you can use 'trackable'
postage or courier services that prove when an item has arrived
or been signed for, or use an escrow services. Please note that
AcademicBookTrade.co.uk does not recommend particular companies
that provide these services, and that we do not take any part in
transactions between buyers and sellers. See Terms and Conditions for more details, and links on the left for postal and other services.
Q:
Do I have to buy or sell by post?
A: You
will need to agree how to make the exchange of money and books
with the other person in the transaction. The most obvious ways
of doing it are by post, or if you are both in the same area, by
arranging a meeting. If you are buying from a second-hand bookshop,
you have an obvious place to meet. If you are buying from another
individual, please remember these sensible precautions:
- Take a friend or relative with you, and/or
tell somebody where you are going, and when.
- Take your phone with you if you have one.
- Agree a neutral public place to meet where
there are plenty of people, rather than a private address.
- Keep your side of the bargain and check
the other person has kept theirs whilst you are still with them:
count the cash; make sure that the cheque has been properly filled
out; check the book is the book you bought, and is in the condition
listed.
Q:
Where do I find out about postage/courier rates?
A: See links
in the menu on the left – please note that postal rates may change,
so you should check each time before you send something. We cannot
take responsibility for the content of external sites.
Q:
How do I find out how much my book weighs?
A: If you
don’t have access to any scales, or those you have are not very
accurate, we suggest you ask your institution or company postroom,
or your nearest post office, to weigh the package for you. Don't
forget to weigh the packaging too, and anything else you will send
with the book.
Q:
Can I sell anything apart from academic books on this site?
A: This site
is for selling academic second hand books only.
Q:
How can I leave general feedback on the site?
A: If you
still have questions, or want to make a suggestion about the site,
please see Contact Us and submit your enquiry/comment using the appropriate heading. We aim to respond
to queries within 24 hours.
Q:
Do you have a telephone helpline?

to your questions on the site please see Contact Us and submit your enquiry/comment using the appropriate heading. We aim to respond
