How to Upload Your
Books
To upload your books onto AcademicBookTrade.co.uk, you will need to
- Export your book records to a file on
your computer, then
- Upload the file onto AcademicBookTrade.co.uk
We will then process your uploaded file and list the books on the site. We will
notify you of any errors that may occur (e.g. an instruction to delete
a book that does not exist).
We will be able to handle most file formats, eg Homebase and UIEE. If you use
an alternative file format please specify it in the file format box
when you upload. If we are not familiar with your system it may take
us slightly longer to process the first upload. If we have any questions
we will contact you.
1. Exporting your book records to a file on your
computer
Exporting your book records will vary depending on the program you use. We give
an example for Homebase 2. Please contact us if you use a different
program and are unable to export your files.
To export book records from Homebase 2:
- In Homebase, Select menu item File
- Import/Export - Export.
(NB: DO NOT select Export
/ Send to Abebooks...)
A dialog box marked "Export" will appear.
- To upload all books, uncheck the "Changed Since" check box.
To upload changes only, leave the "Changed Since" check box checked,
and make sure the "Changed Since" date and time matches the
last time you uploaded to us.
- To upload books in all catalogues, select the "All Books" radio button.
To upload only books in certain categories, select the "Selected
Catalogs" radio button and choose the catalogues you want in
the box below.
- Click on OK. A dialog box marked "Export Books as" will appear.
- Select the file name and folder you want to save the file as.
Homebase will suggest
a file name like DB20031209223125 (DB followed by year, month,
day,
hour,
minute and second - useful so you know exactly when you exported
it).
(You may see this with a ".txt" extension when you have
saved it.)
Homebase will suggest a folder like "C:\Program Files\Homebase\export",
depending on where you have installed Homebase.
Make a note of the file name and folder.
- Click Save
- The file will be exported. Once it is finished, a dialog box marked "Export"
will appear with "Export completed, nn rows exported" where "nn"
is the number of records written to the file.
- Click OK
2. Uploading the file to AcademicBookTrade.co.uk
There are two alternative ways to upload your file, depending on the size of
the file.
a. Uploading files smaller than 2 MB
You can upload files up to 2 MB (2,048 KB) in size using the Upload Books page
from your Bookshop Control Centre.
To upload files:
- Go to the Bookshop
Login page and enter your username and password to login.
You will see your Bookshop Control Centre
- Click on the "Upload books" link to go to the Upload Books page.
- Click on the Browse button, to the right of the File box, and browse to the file you exported from your book record program (e.g.
Homebase).
(You may see the file with a ".txt" extension when you find it.)
- In the Format box, enter the file format (e.g. "Homebase" or "UIEE from Booklist 4").
For UIEE formats, please tell us the program that exported the
file (some need slightly different processing to others).
- You can use the Your ref / uploader field for your own reference (e.g. the name of the person uploading the file).
This will be shown in your upload history.
- Click on Upload
- Depending on the speed of your connection, and the size of the file, uploading
may take a few minutes. During this time your browser will appear
to do nothing: this is normal.
(If nothing seems to happen for a
very long time, try again with a smaller file of just a few books)
- If all is OK, you will see the "File Uploaded Successfully" screen.
If there were any problems (e.g. the upload was incomplete, or
the file was too big) you will get an error message that explains
the
problem.
If any
problems
persist, please contact us for assistance.
- We will then process your upload and install your book listing onto the website.
b. Uploading files larger than 2 MB
Larger files have to be uploaded by FTP (the industry-standard File Transfer
Protocol).
To upload a file larger than 2 MB, please contact us for a special FTP username and password. We will also send you instructions
on how to upload your books using FTP.
Alternatively, you may wish to split your large file into smaller files (e.g.
by saving different catalogues into different files), each smaller
than 2 MB, and use method "a. Uploading files smaller than 2 MB" above. All trademarks are trademarks of their respective owners |
